Ol-Kalou MP-Elect Causes Stir with Matatu Ride to Parliament Swearing-In
NAIROBI, Kenya — Newly elected Ol-Kalou Member of Parliament, Honorable Sammy Kamau Waweru, caused a massive spectacle in the capital today after opting for public transport to attend his official swearing-in ceremony at Parliament Buildings.
In place of the typical high-end SUV motorcades preferred by lawmakers, the vibrant MP arrived aboard a colorful public service vehicle (matatu).
Images circulating rapidly across social media platforms show Honorable Sammy alighting from the commuter vehicle right outside Parliament Road, dressed in a sharp suit while warmly greeting astonished onlookers, commuters, and security personnel.
Elected on the Democracy and Development Party (DCP) ticket—a political outfit closely associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—Sammy’s unexpected entry has drawn widespread praise online.

Many Kenyans have hailed the move as a rare show of humility, grounded leadership, and a direct solidarity gesture with common citizens (wananchi) facing rising living costs.
Addressing journalists outside the parliamentary gates shortly before taking his oath of office, the newly minted legislator explained that his choice of transit was intentional, designed to remind him of the everyday struggles faced by his constituents in Ol-Kalou.
“I came here in a matatu because that is the reality of the people who voted for me,” Honorable Sammy stated. “Leadership is about service, not high-end luxury.
As I take this oath, I carry the hopes and daily challenges of ordinary Kenyans directly into the floor of the House.”
The dramatic arrival set a lively tone for the opening of the legislative session, with fellow lawmakers and observers gathering to witness the newcomer take his solemn affirmation.
Honorable Sammy now steps into office facing high expectations from his constituency to turn his populist grand gesture into tangible legislative development.
