DCP Convoy Stoned in Nakuru Amid Escalating Political Tension
Political activity in the Rift Valley region turned chaotic on Friday, August 14, 2026, after a Democratic Congress Party (DCP) motorcade transporting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was ambushed and pelted with stones in Soko Mjinga, Nakuru West Sub-County.
The convoy was entering the market area as part of a scheduled grassroots mobilization tour across Nakuru County aimed at solidifying DCP’s presence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Eyewitnesses reported that a hostile group blocked the road and threw stones without prior provocation, shattering windscreens and causing notable damage to several vehicles in the fleet.
“They started throwing stones at us without any provocation. Luckily, we are not hurt, but we have no idea if Mheshimiwa was unharmed,” stated one of the drivers in the convoy.
The attack occurred shortly after Gachagua opened a new regional DCP office in Naivasha earlier in the day.

The tour had already generated political friction, following public warnings from Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, who cautioned Gachagua against promoting divisive politics in the Rift Valley.
The Nakuru violence mirrors a separate political disturbance on the same day in Bomet Town, where Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i was forced to cut his speech short.
Matiang’i encountered a hostile crowd chanting pro-Ruto slogans during his South Rift tour, prompting his entourage to abandon planned engagements in Mulot and leave the area.
These twin incidents highlight rising political volatility in the region as key opposition figures attempt to establish strongholds ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle. Local authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding arrests following the Nakuru motorcade attack.
