The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is facing renewed internal turmoil following a bold declaration by Siaya Governor James Orengo, a move that has dealt a political blow to the party’s current leadership under Oburu Odinga.
Speaking during a public event in Nakuru, Orengo stirred controversy after announcing that he would assume the role of acting party leader, citing what he described as a leadership vacuum and failure by Oburu to effectively steer the party.
His remarks have intensified an already simmering power struggle within the opposition outfit.
ODM has been grappling with leadership wrangles since the passing of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga.
Although Oburu Odinga was formally ratified as the party leader, sections of the party have remained uneasy, questioning his ability to unify members and maintain ODM’s influence in the country’s political landscape.

In his address, Orengo argued that decisive action was necessary to “save the soul of the party.”
He accused the current leadership of weakening ODM at a time when it faces pressure from the ruling administration. According to him, external forces are keen on dismantling the opposition, and only firm leadership can prevent that outcome.
Orengo further emphasized his long-standing commitment to the party and its founding ideals, stating that he could not sit back and watch its decline.
His declaration, however, has been met with mixed reactions, with some leaders backing his stance while others have termed it unconstitutional and divisive.
The unfolding leadership dispute now threatens to deepen divisions within ODM, raising concerns about its preparedness ahead of future political contests.
Analysts warn that unless the party resolves its internal conflicts swiftly, it risks losing its standing as a formidable opposition force.
As tensions continue to rise, all eyes remain on ODM’s next steps in addressing the growing leadership crisis.
