Politics in Trans Nzoia County are rapidly taking shape ahead of the 2027 general election, with new challengers emerging to take on incumbent Governor George Natembeya.
The latest to signal a serious interest in the seat is Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, whose bold political declaration has sparked fresh debate within the county and beyond.
Natembeya, who has positioned himself as a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration, has increasingly found himself at the centre of political pushback.
In recent weeks, the governor publicly urged Luhya voters to stop following Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula “blindly,” arguing that the two leaders have failed to deliver meaningful development to the region despite decades in national politics. His remarks have not gone down well with leaders allied to the ruling coalition.

Speaking during a public engagement, Nakhumicha outlined what she described as a clear and people-focused strategy to unseat Natembeya in 2027.
The Health CS said she plans to conduct intensive door-to-door campaigns across Trans Nzoia County to directly engage residents and explain why she believes she is better suited to lead the county.
According to Nakhumicha, her campaign will focus on educating voters on the importance of cooperation between county governments and the national government.
She argued that development can only be accelerated when governors work closely with the sitting administration, rather than constantly opposing it.
She further accused Natembeya of prioritising political confrontations over service delivery, a claim that is likely to fuel further political tension in the county.
Nakhumicha expressed confidence that Trans Nzoia residents are ready for a new leadership approach aligned with national development agendas.
With more than two years to the elections, political temperatures in Trans Nzoia continue to rise, setting the stage for what is shaping up to be a highly competitive and closely watched gubernatorial contest in 2027.
