Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has officially responded to the resignation of her deputy, Joseph Oyugi Magwanga, signaling a definitive end to their political partnership. In a formal statement released on February 27, 2026, the Governor confirmed she has accepted Magwanga’s exit with immediate effect.
The resignation, tendered by Magwanga on February 26, cited “persistent and irreconcilable differences.” While Magwanga has publicly claimed his departure was fueled by frustrations and obstruction within the county leadership, Governor Wanga’s statement offered a different perspective, attributing the fallout to shifting political priorities.
“A sustained preoccupation with future political ambitions increasingly compromised the collective focus required in the Office of the Deputy Governor,” Wanga stated.

She emphasized that the people of Homa Bay are entitled to “full-time, undivided service” from their leaders.
The Governor highlighted the administration’s efforts to support Magwanga, noting that he had been entrusted with the additional portfolio of County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock Development.
However, she pointed to a “lack of unity of purpose,” specifically referencing Magwanga’s decision to oppose the ODM party candidate in the recent Kasipul by-election—a move she described as a matter of public record that undermined their shared mandate.
Seeking to reassure the public, Wanga declared the Office of the Deputy Governor vacant pursuant to the Constitution of Kenya and the County Governments Act. She maintained that county operations would remain seamless and that service delivery would proceed uninterrupted across all wards.
“Under my leadership, the County Government continues to uphold accountability and maintain institutional stability,” Wanga affirmed.
As the political landscape in Homa Bay shifts, Governor Wanga concluded by thanking the former Deputy Governor for his service and wishing him well in his future endeavors, even as the search for a successor begins in accordance with the law.
