Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has ignited fresh political debate after remarks he made alongside former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, fueling speculation of a possible future alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna was speaking on January 3, 2026, in Murang’a County during the burial of the late Mrs. Gakuya, the mother of Embakasi South Member of Parliament James Gakuya.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the outspoken senator appeared to directly address Gachagua with a politically loaded message that has left many Kenyans reading between the lines.
In his remarks, Sifuna urged the former Deputy President to continue pushing his agenda of making President William Ruto a one-term leader, while hinting that he himself would continue fighting the same battle “from another camp.”

Using a metaphor that quickly caught public attention, Sifuna said that eventually, “they will manage to kill a hyena,” a statement widely interpreted as a reference to defeating a common political opponent in 2027.
The comments have sparked intense discussion, especially given Sifuna’s strained relationship with the leadership of the broad-based administration that ODM joined after the death of party leader Raila Odinga.
Political observers note that Sifuna’s words, delivered in the presence of Gachagua and leaders allied to him, could signal an attempt to build bridges with the Mount Kenya political bloc.
Analysts further suggest that such an outreach could be strategic for Sifuna’s political future. By appealing to Mount Kenya voters while consolidating support among the Luhya community and maintaining his base in Nairobi, Sifuna could significantly strengthen his re-election prospects as Nairobi Senator.
While neither Sifuna nor Gachagua has openly declared a political alliance, the viral video has ensured that speculation around their 2027 game plan is now firmly in the national spotlight.
