President William Ruto is intensifying efforts to secure a second term ahead of the 2027 general election, with his political strategy widely viewed as targeting support from the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) base, particularly in the Nyanza region.
However, a new political development captured in a viral video from Nyanza suggests that the President’s path to re-election may be facing unexpected complications from within his own administration.
In the video, Eliud Owalo, a senior appointee of President Ruto, openly speaks about his ambitions to lead Kenya and challenge the current Head of State in the 2027 race.
Owalo, who currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency in the Executive Office of the President, made the remarks while addressing congregants after a church service.

Owalo told the gathering that he is ready to face Kenyans and articulate his vision for the country, noting that leadership should be based on ideas, inclusivity, and national unity.
He called on residents of the Nyanza region to support his journey and allow him to build friendships and alliances across the country, signaling a national—not regional—approach to his political ambitions.
While he did not announce the political party he intends to use, his remarks have already sparked debate across the political divide.
The declaration is particularly striking given Owalo’s current position in President Ruto’s inner executive team.
Before his appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff, Owalo served as the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and the Digital Economy, a role that placed him at the center of the government’s digital transformation agenda.
Political analysts say Owalo’s comments could complicate President Ruto’s efforts to consolidate support in Nyanza, a region traditionally aligned with ODM.
They also raise questions about loyalty, internal competition, and the shifting political alliances likely to define the road to 2027.
As the election season gradually takes shape, Owalo’s bold statements suggest that President Ruto may face challenges not only from opposition heavyweights, but also from ambitious figures emerging within his own camp.
