The Orange Democratic Party (ODM) has continued to experience turbulent times as it struggles to redefine its future following the death of its longtime leader Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025.
For weeks, the once formidable opposition outfit has been rocked by internal divisions, with rival factions emerging over whether the party should align itself with President William Ruto’s broad-based administration or remain firmly in opposition while pushing for dialogue.
At the center of the storm has been ODM Secretary General Senator Edwin Sifuna, whose outspoken stance against cooperation with the government has placed him on a collision course with some senior party figures.

His public exchanges with Suna East MP Junet Mohammed escalated tensions, prompting sections of the public and party insiders to call for his removal from the powerful secretary general position.
However, a significant development unfolded on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, when Sifuna held a high-level meeting with Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, Raila’s elder brother.
The meeting was widely seen as a deliberate attempt to calm the storm and restore unity within the ODM leadership as the party navigates the sensitive post-Raila transition.
Later in the day, during Raila Odinga’s birthday celebration held at his Karen home, Sifuna directly addressed growing claims that he was considering quitting the party.
In a video that has since circulated widely online, the Nairobi senator firmly dismissed the rumors, insisting that he has no intention of wrecking or abandoning ODM.
Sifuna reminded attendees of the pledge he made during Raila Odinga’s burial, where he vowed to protect the party and its ideals.
He emphasized that dialogue, not division, would guide his leadership going forward, even with leaders he has openly disagreed with in the past.
In an emotional moment, Sifuna also promised Mama Ida Odinga that he would continue fighting for the values and beliefs Raila stood for, signaling his commitment to keeping ODM united during one of its most defining moments.
