The political battle ahead of the 2027 General Election continues to intensify as leaders allied to President William Ruto and those backing the emerging opposition camps scramble for support across key regions.
Mount Kenya, long considered a decisive voting bloc, has once again taken centre stage in shaping the national political conversation.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has increasingly positioned himself as a kingpin in the region, with reports indicating that he is leaning towards former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as a preferred opposition flag bearer.
On the other hand, President Ruto’s allies have maintained a strong push for a second term, insisting that the Head of State deserves another mandate.
However, tensions between the two camps were laid bare during a funeral ceremony in Mathira, Nyeri County, where leaders associated with the “two-term” brigade reportedly faced a hostile reception.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Mathira Constituency MP aspirant Hon. Dominic Muraya openly lectured Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, both of whom are perceived to be aligned with President Ruto.
The crowd appeared to cheer Muraya’s remarks, with chants and applause erupting as he delivered his message, widely interpreted as echoing Gachagua’s sentiments.
Senator Wamatinga and MP Wamumbi were seen listening in silence as residents celebrated the defiant tone, a moment that political observers say underscores the shifting mood in the region.
The event took place at a condolence gathering held in Kirimukuyu Ward, Mathira, following the tragic death of two-year-old Terry Wanjiru, who reportedly drowned at her home in Ngaini.
Muraya stated that he was delivering the message on behalf of Rigathi Gachagua’s long-time friend, Wambui Juliet.
Notably, the funeral was held in Senator Wamatinga’s home village, making the incident even more symbolic.
Analysts argue that the episode signals growing resistance to the two-term narrative in parts of Mount Kenya and highlights Gachagua’s rising influence as the 2027 race draws closer.
