Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has publicly outlined his reasons for opposing the presidential bid of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, ahead of the January 2026 general election.
Speaking during a televised interview that has since circulated widely online, Museveni took direct aim at the opposition figure, accusing him of misleading young people and advancing foreign interests.
According to the long-serving president, Bobi Wine lacks the ideological grounding and experience required to lead Uganda.
Museveni alleged that for years, the NUP leader has been used by external actors to manipulate the country’s youth, whom he described as vulnerable to “brainwashing” through misinformation and populist messaging. He claimed that these efforts are part of a broader plan to undermine Uganda’s political stability and economic progress.

Museveni further asserted that Uganda has registered significant gains under his leadership, citing improvements in infrastructure, security, and regional influence.
He argued that these achievements are now under threat from what he termed “foreign interference,” which he linked to Bobi Wine’s political rise.
When pressed by the journalist to name the countries allegedly backing the opposition leader, Museveni claimed that several European nations were involved, accusing them of arrogance and hidden agendas against Uganda.
Addressing the youth vote, Museveni maintained that the majority of young Ugandans support his leadership and appreciate the country’s current direction. He insisted that only a small group has been swayed by the opposition’s rhetoric, which he dismissed as divisive and deceptive.
The president used the interview to appeal to voters to re-elect him, saying his continued leadership is necessary to safeguard Uganda’s sovereignty and preserve the gains made since he came to power.
Meanwhile, Bobi Wine and the NUP have repeatedly denied allegations of foreign control, framing Museveni’s remarks as an attempt to discredit the opposition ahead of a highly anticipated election.
