Embu County Governor Cecily Mbarire on Thursday faced a hostile reception at Kaungu Polling Station in Mbeere North, where she had gone to observe the ongoing by-election.
A video circulating widely on social media shows residents escorting the governor out of the station while chanting “one term!” in a scene that has stirred intense political debate within the county.
Governor Mbarire, who also serves as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Chairperson, arrived at the polling centre in the company of Runyenjes Member of Parliament.
However, moments after their arrival, some residents confronted the leaders, accusing them of attempting to influence the voting process.
According to witnesses at the scene, the crowd insisted that the two leaders leave the station immediately, claiming their presence was causing unnecessary tension.

Election officials are seen in the video attempting to calm the situation, but the agitated group continued to push the leaders toward their vehicles. The chants of “one term!” echoed through the station as the governor was escorted out by a group of visibly angry residents.
Local authorities have not confirmed whether any formal complaints were filed, though police officers were present to ensure the confrontation did not escalate into violence. Governor Mbarire has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Political observers note that Mbarire’s reception signals a shift in the political mood in Embu County compared to the 2022 general election, when she enjoyed widespread popularity and overwhelming support.
The incident now raises questions about the governor’s current standing and how it may shape the political dynamics ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The by-election in Mbeere North has been characterized by high tension, with various leaders visiting polling centres throughout the day as residents continue to cast their votes.
