Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has offered pointed advice to President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration on how to address the persistent challenges facing Kenya’s education sector.
Speaking during a public forum in Kiambu, Matiang’i weighed in on the ongoing transition from the 8-4-4 system to the Competency-Based Education (CBE), which has sparked widespread concern among parents and education stakeholders.
His remarks come days after protests by parents angered by school placements they felt did not reflect their children’s academic performance. Matiang’i argued that the current crisis is not merely about placement but about poor consultation and rushed implementation.
According to the former CS, the government must urgently convene an inclusive national dialogue on education reforms.

He emphasized that church leaders, parents, teachers, education professionals, and policy experts must all be brought to the table to share their views and propose workable solutions.
Matiang’i noted that education affects every household and cannot be successfully reformed through top-down decisions.
He warned that failure to engage stakeholders meaningfully would prolong instability in the sector and expose Kenyan learners to years of uncertainty.
If handled through broad consultation and consensus, he said, the transition to CBE could be stabilized and improved. Otherwise, the education system risks remaining in crisis, with long-term consequences for the country’s future.
