The Luo Council of Elders has finally broken its silence regarding the heated succession debate that has gripped the Luo community following the death of former ODM leader Raila Odinga.
For weeks, political leaders from the region have been positioning themselves as potential kingpins, triggering a wave of speculation and public debate across Nyanza and beyond.
Among the prominent figures mentioned in the succession contest are Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga.
Each of them has been floated by various groups within the community as a possible successor, with some claiming to enjoy the blessings of elders and local power structures.
However, in a televised interview on a local station, the chairperson of the Luo Council of Elders firmly dismissed the ongoing claims, insisting that the council has not endorsed anyone for the community’s top political role.

He emphasized that any individual suggesting they have the elders’ approval is misleading the public and attempting to rush a process that must be handled with dignity, unity, and cultural order.
According to the council chair, the Luo community’s leadership transition is a sensitive affair that cannot be dictated by political ambition or personal interests. He noted that the council would guide the process at the appropriate time and urged all leaders to exercise restraint.
He further called on those already campaigning for the kingpin position to respect the traditional structures, adding that the unity of the community was more important than personal advancement.
The elders reiterated that Raila Odinga’s legacy should not be used as a political stepping stone by opportunistic leaders but should instead guide a mature and consultative transition process.
Their message appears aimed at cooling political temperatures in the region as the community awaits clear direction on its future leadership.
