The debate surrounding President William Ruto’s re-election bid in the 2027 General Election continues to intensify, with political leaders taking firm and often opposing positions.
While allies of the Head of State insist that President Ruto deserves a second term based on what they describe as his development record, opposition voices argue that his administration has failed Kenyans through increased taxation and alleged misuse of public resources.
Amid this growing national conversation, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the 2027 political landscape.
ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has now weighed in on the matter, shedding light on the conditions under which the party could support President Ruto’s re-election.
Speaking during a condolence visit by the ODM leadership to the home of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Honorable Cyrus Jirongo, Wanga stated that ODM’s support for Ruto in 2027 is not automatic.

According to her, the party would first need to engage in structured talks with the President to agree on key issues, including how political positions would be shared.
Wanga explained that the current broad-based government arrangement was merely a post-election political understanding and not a long-term pact.
She emphasized that before any decision on 2027 is made, ODM would have to renegotiate its engagement with President Ruto to ensure that any agreement benefits ODM supporters and Kenyans at large.
The ODM Chairperson further noted that unity within the party is critical before entering into such high-level negotiations. She stressed that ODM must speak with one voice to effectively push its agenda and safeguard the interests of its members and supporters.
Her remarks have sparked mixed reactions across the political divide, with some viewing them as a strategic move while others see them as early bargaining ahead of the 2027 polls.
As the election approaches, ODM’s final stance is likely to significantly influence the country’s political direction.
