A fresh political exchange has emerged between President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following remarks about influence in Nyeri County.
The dispute stems from comments made by President Ruto during a recent church event in Othaya, Nyeri County, where he asserted that he has a deep understanding of the region and enjoys a strong relationship with its residents.
Ruto stated that his connection with the people of Nyeri is firm and cannot be easily shaken by political opponents.
However, Gachagua has now fired back, dismissing the President’s claims and asserting his own deep-rooted ties to the county.
Speaking at a separate public gathering, the former Deputy President emphasized that he was born and raised in Nyeri, arguing that his lifelong connection gives him a better understanding of the region’s needs and political direction.

Gachagua further accused Ruto of making empty promises to the people of Nyeri during his visits. He claimed that the President’s engagements in the region are often driven by political convenience rather than genuine concern for residents’ welfare.
According to Gachagua, such promises have not translated into tangible development for the county.
In his remarks, Gachagua also signaled his intention to intensify political mobilization in the region.
He stated that he would work to ensure that Nyeri voters are more informed ahead of the next general election, urging them to critically assess leadership and accountability.
The exchange highlights growing political tensions as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
Nyeri County, considered a key political stronghold in the Mount Kenya region, is expected to play a significant role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
Observers note that such public disagreements could signal shifting alliances and heightened competition for influence in the vote-rich region.
