Sifuna Defiant After Being Stripped of Senate Deputy Minority Whip Role
In a dramatic shift within the opposition leadership, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been removed from his position as the Senate Deputy Minority Whip. The formal communication was delivered by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, who confirmed that Migori Senator Eddy Oketch will assume the role with immediate effect.
The decision follows a resolution by the Minority Party, amid deepening political realignments within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The reshuffle came just days after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) formally recognized the removal of Sifuna as the party’s Secretary-General.
Addressing the developments, a resilient Sifuna responded with a mix of defiance and grace. Quoting scripture, the vocal Nairobi lawmaker suggested that those behind his ouster were welcome to strip away whatever else they desired.
“I don’t know what else these people can take,” Sifuna said. “There’s a Bible verse that says when someone takes your coat, give them even your shirt. I want them to come for my shirt—I am prepared.”
Despite the setback, Sifuna expressed gratitude to the minority coalition for their support during his tenure. He also magnanimously congratulated his successor, Eddy Oketch, and wished him well.
“I want to congratulate my younger brother Eddy Oketch. It is now going to be his job to whip members so that we can raise quorum,” Sifuna stated.
The leadership changes highlight escalating internal friction within ODM, particularly regarding the party’s working relationship with the ruling administration. Sifuna has remained a sharp critic of the rapprochement, promising that losing his legislative seat will not silence his advocacy on governance and accountability issues.
