Residents of Gotinyango village in Nyaribari Masaba, Kisii County, were on Wednesday gripped by shock and disbelief after a family exhumed a grave to confirm the identity of a body they buried seven months ago. This followed a dramatic twist in which the woman they believed they had laid to rest suddenly called home alive and well.
According to the family, their daughter, Sarah, was reportedly involved in a grisly road accident seven months earlier. They were informed of her death, travelled to the mortuary, and identified a body presented to them as theirs. The remains were later buried at her parents’ homestead in an emotional send-off attended by relatives and villagers.

However, their world was turned upside down this week when they received a phone call from Sarah herself, calmly informing them that she was alive. Stunned and confused, the family traced her whereabouts and confirmed beyond doubt that she had not died as earlier believed.
The shocking revelation prompted the family to seek a court order to exhume the body they had buried. The exhumation took place today in the presence of local authorities, a pastor, and village elders, who gathered to witness the unprecedented event. The body has since been returned to the mortuary as investigations commence to establish the identity of the deceased woman mistakenly buried as Sarah.
With their daughter now back home, the family says they are preparing to conduct traditional cleansing rites to welcome her formally and restore spiritual order after the traumatic mix-up.
The incident has sparked widespread debate in the village, with many residents still struggling to grasp how such a case of mistaken identity occurred in the first place. Authorities are expected to issue a detailed report once the ongoing investigations are completed.
