Tensions ran high during the Mbeere North by-election after Cabinet Secretary Hon. Ruku was ordered to leave a polling station, sparking dramatic scenes captured on video and widely shared online.
According to footage from the incident, the Cabinet Secretary arrived at the station accompanied by his security detail, but his presence quickly drew concern from electoral officials and residents.
The Presiding Officer is heard firmly instructing Ruku to vacate the polling centre, noting that he was not an accredited official and therefore could not remain within the restricted area during the voting process.

The directive appeared to irritate the Cabinet Secretary, who momentarily confronted the officer before complying.
Visibly agitated, Ruku walked out of the station under close escort from his security team. As he made his way out, the gathered crowd erupted into chants of “one term,” signalling clear displeasure with his presence and what they perceived as interference in the electoral process.
Some residents expressed worry that senior political figures visiting polling stations during voting hours could intimidate voters or influence the process.
Police officers at the venue maintained order as tensions simmered, ensuring that the situation did not escalate further. Electoral officials later emphasized that all individuals—including high-ranking government officials—must adhere to IEBC regulations governing access to polling stations.
The incident has since elicited mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans condemning the confrontation while others defending the Presiding Officer’s firm enforcement of election rules.
