President William Ruto may be facing fresh political headwinds ahead of the 2027 General Election following the defection of a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader from the Rift Valley, a region widely viewed as his political stronghold.
In a video circulating online, John Bernard Njuguna, a former UDA parliamentary aspirant for the Cherangany constituency in the 2022 General Election, announced that he has officially quit the ruling party and joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which is associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Njuguna cited alleged unfair treatment within UDA as the main reason for his decision. He claimed that despite actively seeking the party’s nomination in 2022, the ticket was controversially awarded to what he described as a “weak candidate,” a move he says cost UDA the seat after it was won by DAP-Kenya.
According to Njuguna, the nomination process ignored grassroots voices and violated internal party democracy.
The former UDA aspirant now says DCP has assured him of a transparent and credible nomination process ahead of the 2027 polls.
He has urged Cherangany residents to rally behind his new political journey, promising people-centered leadership and accountability.
In a bold declaration, Njuguna labeled incumbent Cherangany MP Patrick Simiyu a “one-term MP,” announcing his intention to challenge him for the parliamentary seat on a DCP ticket in 2027.
The defection has sparked debate among Kenyans, particularly in the Rift Valley, as it raises questions about internal discontent within UDA and President Ruto’s grip on the region as the next election cycle draws closer.
