Siaya County Governor His Excellency James Orengo is facing fresh political headwinds following his continued opposition to key decisions made by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), particularly the party’s cooperation with President William Ruto under the broad-based government arrangement.
Governor Orengo has been vocal in rejecting ODM’s participation in the arrangement, insisting that the party should remain firmly in the opposition.
His position has, however, sparked sharp criticism from sections of ODM leaders and allies of Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga, who is widely regarded as the party’s senior-most figure following the passing of the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The latest blow to Orengo’s political standing emerged from Siaya, where Deputy Governor William Oduol has officially declared his intention to vie for the governorship in the 2027 general elections on an ODM ticket.
The declaration, which was accompanied by a widely shared video, has significantly altered the county’s political landscape.
Speaking during the announcement, Oduol claimed that he was a key architect of the manifesto that propelled Orengo to victory in the last election.
He alleged that after assuming office, the governor abandoned the agreed development agenda and opted to run the county based on personal interests rather than the collective vision presented to voters.
Oduol’s entry into the race sets the stage for a high-stakes political contest within ODM, pitting a sitting governor against his deputy in what is expected to be a bruising nomination battle.
Political observers argue that the move signals growing internal dissatisfaction with Orengo’s leadership style and his open defiance of party resolutions.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, analysts say Governor Orengo may be forced back to the drawing board to reassess his political strategy, mend relations within ODM, and reconnect with grassroots supporters if he hopes to secure a second term.
As things stand, Siaya County appears headed for an intense political showdown that could redefine ODM politics in the region.
