Kenya’s education sector is set for a major transformation as the World Bank-supported Teacher Upgrade Programme enters its implementation stage, with hundreds of training centres already confirmed across the country.
The rollout, which targets thousands of primary school (P1) teachers seeking to upgrade to degree level, has generated intense buzz within the profession with Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers reportedly taking on their P1 colleagues over the fast-moving upgrade wave.
According to the current plan, universities contracted by the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will train teachers within their home counties to reduce cost and enhance accessibility. Because of the large enrollment numbers, the training will take place not only in universities but also in selected high schools and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs).
In Nairobi, centres approved for training include Lenana School, Buru Buru Girls, Jamhuri High, Pangani Girls, KISE Kasarani, Lang’ata High and Moi Forces Academy. These venues are expected to host some of the highest teacher numbers due to the county’s dense population.
The Central region has an equally robust list led by Alliance High School, Kenyatta University, Karatina University, JKUAT, Thogoto TTC, Kamwenja TTC, Bishop Gatimu Girls, Murang’a TTC, Laikipia University, Dedan Kimathi University and Kirinyaga University. The distribution reflects the region’s long-standing dominance in teacher training capacity.
