Authorities said the individual was moving toward the main event area when gunfire erupted, triggering panic among the more than 2,000 attendees.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as Secret Service agents swiftly moved to evacuate the president, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other top officials. Guests were seen ducking under tables while security personnel flooded the venue.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect, who was armed with multiple weapons including firearms and knives, was apprehended at the scene. One officer was struck but protected by a bullet-resistant vest, and no fatalities were reported.
Interim Washington, D.C. police chief Jeffery Carroll stated that investigators have yet to determine the motive or whether the president was the intended target. The suspect is believed to have acted alone, though the investigation remains active.
Despite the scare, Trump praised the swift response of security agencies and indicated that the annual event would be rescheduled. He reiterated that such threats would not disrupt American public life or his presidency.
