The United opposition faces a looming challenge as Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i delivered a stark warning to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua regarding the 2027 general elections.
For months, Gachagua has openly criticized the Jubilee Party, branding it a “red wheelbarrow” and urging Mount Kenya residents to steer clear of the party’s influence. These comments strained relations between Gachagua and former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s allies.
Gachagua’s strategy has long been clear: position himself as the kingmaker in Mount Kenya and ensure the DCP Party secures a majority of political seats across the region, from local wards to parliamentary positions. However, recent statements by Matiang’i suggest that this plan may face serious hurdles.

Speaking to journalists, Matiang’i emphasized that the Jubilee Party is already preparing for the 2027 elections. “We intend to field candidates for all political positions—from MCA to the presidency.
Our machinery is ready, and we will ensure the people’s choice is respected,” Matiang’i said. The CS added that the party is actively engaging in negotiations with other political formations within the United opposition to coordinate strategies and avoid unnecessary fragmentation.
Political analysts say Matiang’i’s declaration could disrupt Gachagua’s ambitions in Mount Kenya. “If Jubilee mobilizes effectively, Gachagua’s dream of regional dominance may remain just that—a dream,” said one analyst familiar with the region’s political landscape.
The coming months are likely to test the cohesion of the United opposition. While negotiations are ongoing, the challenge for Gachagua will be to consolidate support without alienating key political stakeholders.
As the 2027 polls approach, all eyes will remain on Mount Kenya, a region that could very well determine the direction of Kenya’s political future.
