Tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) escalated on Sunday following a charged political rally in Mombasa, where embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna intensified his attacks against a rival faction aligned to Oburu Odinga.
Sifuna, who has recently come under pressure from sections of the party leadership seeking his removal, addressed supporters during his “Linda Mwananchi” initiative at Tononoka grounds.
He was flanked by key allies including James Orengo, Godfrey Osotsi, and Babu Owino. The leaders used the platform to defend Sifuna’s position while criticizing those within ODM pushing for leadership changes.
In his address, Sifuna fired sharp salvos at Oburu and his allies, accusing them of undermining party democracy and attempting to silence dissenting voices.

The rally further exposed deepening cracks within ODM, with rival factions appearing increasingly unwilling to reconcile.
However, shortly after the rally, fresh controversy emerged when Robert Alai weighed in on the unfolding standoff. Alai advised Oburu to act swiftly by ordering the immediate repossession of ODM party vehicles currently being used by Sifuna during his political engagements.
According to Alai, it is inappropriate for Sifuna to continue utilizing party resources while openly criticizing the party’s leadership.
He argued that such assets should be returned to the party headquarters without delay, suggesting that failure to act could set a dangerous precedent within ODM ranks.
The remarks are likely to further inflame tensions within the party, as Sifuna’s camp insists he remains the legitimate Secretary General despite ongoing disputes.
With the wrangles showing no signs of easing, ODM now faces a critical test of unity, as internal divisions threaten to weaken its political standing ahead of key national engagements.
