Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a dramatic account of the events that unfolded in Narok on Tuesday, claiming that there was a deliberate plot to assassinate him during his visit to the county.
Speaking at a press conference on November 26, 2025, Gachagua alleged that he survived an attempt on his life after receiving intelligence from what he termed “credible and trusted sources.”
Gachagua had travelled to Narok to campaign for the Democratic Change Party (DCP) candidate ahead of an upcoming by-election.
Tension began early in the day when he and his entourage were blocked by security officers at Suswa along the Narok–Mai Mahiu Highway, preventing them from accessing Narok Town.
Hours later, tear gas canisters were lobbed at him and several of his allies when they attempted to address supporters within the town.
According to Gachagua, the confrontation was part of a wider, coordinated plan to eliminate him. He claimed that private intel warned him that he was the primary target of a planned attack allegedly orchestrated within Narok Town.
“They wanted to kill me,” he said. “The information I received indicated that the attackers intended to shoot me in the head and disguise the incident.”

The former Deputy President revealed that upon receiving the alert, he opted to wear a bulletproof vest and specialized protective headgear throughout the day. This, he said, was a precautionary measure based on the gravity of the threat conveyed to him.
Gachagua further explained that security officers stationed at Suswa expected him to approach Narok Town using the main route, but he employed what he described as “alternative tactics” to access the town without detection.
He said his unexpected arrival shocked both the police and those he believes had planned the alleged attack.
“How I entered Narok town surprised them. And how I left, they did not know,” he stated, adding that his security team used evasive maneuvers to eventually escort him out of the county.
He claimed that multiple roadblocks had been set up along the exit routes, allegedly to prevent him from leaving the area or proceeding with his planned political engagements.
Despite the teargas confrontation and the heightened tension, Gachagua said he managed to return home safely with the help of his security detail. He asserted that the events of the day were politically motivated and warned that similar threats may be looming for other opposition leaders.
“I want to urge all leaders in the opposition to be extremely careful. People out here are targeting us and even those close to us,” he cautioned.
Police have not issued an official statement responding to Gachagua’s allegations, and no independent verification has been provided regarding the assassination claims.
However, the incident has stirred national debate, with some leaders demanding an investigation into the reported security breakdown and others calling for restraint and verification of facts.
As political temperatures continue to rise ahead of several by-elections, the Narok incident has added a new layer of tension to the already heated political atmosphere in the country.
