The simmering political standoff within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has escalated after the party’s Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, made explosive claims against National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed over the 2022 General Election.
Speaking during a public address in Murang’a County, Sifuna accused Junet Mohammed of actions that he claims significantly undermined Raila Odinga’s presidential bid under the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
The remarks come amid growing internal disagreements within ODM over the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to Sifuna, Junet Mohammed was entrusted with funds allegedly facilitated by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to support Azimio’s election operations, including paying party agents tasked with safeguarding Raila Odinga’s votes at polling stations.
However, Sifuna claimed that the money never reached the agents on the ground, weakening the coalition’s vote protection efforts.

In a video that has since circulated widely on social media, Sifuna alleged that the failure to pay agents left many polling stations exposed, a factor he claims contributed to Raila’s loss.
He further accused Junet of benefiting personally from the funds, an allegation that has intensified debate and drawn mixed reactions from ODM supporters.
Sifuna also defended former President Uhuru Kenyatta, urging Junet to stop attacking him. He maintained that Uhuru did his best to support Raila Odinga’s presidential ambitions and should not be blamed for the coalition’s defeat.
The public fallout reflects a deeper rift within ODM, with Junet Mohammed reportedly advocating for cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration, while Sifuna insists that party members and supporters must be fully consulted before any political alignment ahead of 2027.
As tensions rise, ODM leaders are under increasing pressure to manage internal divisions to avoid further weakening the party’s influence on the national political stage.
