President William Ruto’s chances of securing overwhelming support from the Nyanza region ahead of the 2027 general election now appear increasingly complicated following a new political declaration from the region.
Ruto has been actively courting support from across the country as he seeks a second term, with Nyanza remaining a key target due to its long-standing loyalty to the Orange Democratic Party (ODM).
With the formation of the broad-based government and the inclusion of several ODM-linked leaders in his administration, the President had been optimistic about making inroads into the region, especially at a time when Raila Odinga will not be on the presidential ballot for the first time in over two decades.

However, recent developments may force a rethink of that strategy. Reports from Nyanza indicate that Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027.
The declaration has sparked debate among political observers, many of whom argue that Owalo’s bid could significantly reshape voting patterns in the region.
Analysts note that a home-grown presidential candidate is likely to attract strong regional backing, potentially limiting Ruto’s ability to command massive support in Nyanza.
With loyalties expected to shift, the region could once again emerge as a decisive battleground, complicating the President’s path to re-election.
