Intern teachers across the country have been left stunned after the Kenya Kwanza administration announced a fresh delay in their confirmation to permanent and pensionable (PNP) terms.

The announcement, which emerged late at night, has dashed hopes of thousands of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who were expecting confirmation in January 2026.

For over a year, the government, through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), employed intern teachers on one-year contracts to address the growing teacher–student ratio in junior secondary schools.

The teachers were deployed nationwide and assured that the internship programme was a pathway to permanent employment. Many accepted the contracts with optimism, believing that confirmation would come at the start of 2026.

However, according to information contained in an official government communication, the absorption of Junior School intern teachers into permanent and pensionable terms has now been deferred to January 1, 2027.

This means the affected teachers will be required to serve an additional year on contract, effectively working for two years before being confirmed.

The announcement has sparked frustration and anxiety among intern teachers, many of whom had planned their finances and personal lives around the expected January 2026 confirmation.

The delay also pushes their job security into the next general election year, raising political questions around the timing of the decision.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Prof Julius Bitok sought to calm tensions, confirming that about 20,000 intern teachers would continue serving on contract for an extra year.

He emphasized that the government remains committed to their full integration into the Teachers Service Commission once the new timeline is met.

Despite the assurances, the move has been widely viewed as a major setback for intern teachers who feel overworked, underpaid, and uncertain about their future.

As schools reopen and learning continues, the midnight announcement has left many educators questioning the government’s commitment to teacher welfare under the ongoing education reforms.
