Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai has ignited a fresh political storm after making sensational claims about a private conversation he allegedly had with the late Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, weeks before his death.
Speaking during a live interview on a local radio station, Alai claimed that Raila personally reached out to him, expressing deep concern over political developments in Nairobi, particularly involving Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
According to Alai, Raila called him three weeks before his death and, while speaking in their local dialect, voiced dissatisfaction with what he termed as “empty rhetorical slogans” being pushed by some Nairobi politicians to win over the public.

Alai alleged that Raila was unhappy with Babu Owino’s political conduct and urged him to speak out against what he saw as misleading populist politics that did not offer real solutions to Kenyans’ problems.
The remarks have quickly gone viral, sparking intense debate across social media platforms. Supporters of Alai argue that he was simply relaying a candid warning from the late ODM leader, whom many still regard as a moral compass in Kenyan politics.
Others, however, have dismissed the claims as self-serving and opportunistic, accusing Alai of invoking Raila Odinga’s name to politically damage Babu Owino’s growing influence and perceived ambitions for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
The controversy is further fueled by the pair’s recent public fallout. Just weeks ago, Alai and Babu Owino were reportedly involved in a heated altercation at a restaurant in Pangani, an incident that allegedly left Alai disarmed after drawing a gun, escalating tensions between the two leaders.
As the debate rages on, ODM supporters remain divided, with many calling for sobriety and respect for Raila Odinga’s legacy, while others demand clarity on the truth behind Alai’s explosive claims.
