Nyamira High School Teacher Dies by Suicide After Alleged Gambling Loss

0

A high school teacher in Nyamira County was found dead by suicide on Thursday morning after allegedly losing a significant amount of money in a gambling bet.

The teacher, whose identity has not been disclosed, failed to report to school on Wednesday, prompting concern among his colleagues.

They went looking for him after he missed school and did not answer his phone throughout the day.

“We tried reaching him by phone, but it went unanswered all day,” one of the teachers said. The continued lack of response throughout the night led his colleagues to check on him at his house.

Upon arriving at his residence, they found the door locked from the inside, but the phone was still ringing without being answered.

Peering through the window, they discovered his body hanging from the roof with a shawl.

A colleague revealed that the deceased had confided in him about his financial difficulties.

“He had financial problems. He came to me and borrowed some cash and said he had many debts but was working on paying them,” the teacher stated.

The deceased, 27, had been employed by the school’s board of management for four years.

Another teacher mentioned that the deceased had borrowed about Sh50,000 from a friend and gambled it, only to lose the bet.

“The loss must have stressed him and led him to take his life to avoid repaying the amount,” the teacher speculated.

The tragic incident has shocked the school community, highlighting the severe impact of financial distress and gambling addiction.

The teachers and students are now grappling with the loss of their colleague and mentor, as they await further details from the ongoing investigation by local authorities.

Fresh Details Emerge of Police Officer Beaten Up in Viral Video

0

A viral video circulating on social media has captured a shocking incident where a man was seen brutally assaulting a police officer with blows and kicks.

According to a police report obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the altercation began when the officer attempted to prevent the motorist from making an illegal U-turn, which was causing a traffic obstruction.

The motorist, after hitting a curb and stopping, gave the officer an opportunity to enter his vehicle and attempt to direct him to a police station.

However, the situation escalated when the motorist drove off for a short distance before pulling out a sword from under his seat, forcing the officer out of the vehicle. The motorist then continued to assault the officer, beating him until he fell into a ditch.

Bystanders eventually intervened, rescuing the officer and transporting him to a nearby health facility. Due to the severity of his injuries, the officer was later transferred to Mama Lucy Hospital for further treatment.

The main suspect involved in the 8:00 am incident is still at large, but police have arrested an accomplice who is assisting with the investigation.

This incident adds to a troubling trend of attacks on police officers. On April 29, a female officer was assaulted by a colleague at Gongoni Police Station in Kilifi County.

The attack occurred after she requested a file from her colleague, who refused and responded with physical violence, leaving her with facial injuries, particularly to her lower jaw.

Authorities are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the main suspect to come forward to help bring him to justice. Meanwhile, the police are continuing their investigation to ensure the safety and security of their officers and the public.

Inside Ruto’s Lunch Meeting With Gachagua Before Madaraka Speech

0

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has dismissed claims that President William Ruto’s recent warning against engaging in “divisive politics” was aimed at his Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.

In an interview on Citizen TV, Mudavadi reiterated that there is no bad blood between President Ruto and Deputy President Gachagua.

He emphasized that the two leaders maintain a strong and amicable relationship.

Before the Madaraka Day celebrations at Masinde Muliro Stadium, Ruto and Gachagua shared a meal and resolved any issues between them, Mudavadi noted. They also sat together for lunch following the 61st Madaraka Day celebrations.

“He (Ruto) was addressing the Kenyan people. If he wanted to address his deputy president, he wouldn’t have done it that way.

He would have spoken to him directly,” stated Mudavadi, adding that the President and his Deputy frequently hold one-on-one meetings. Mudavadi stressed that Ruto’s call for politicians to shun ethnic politics was a national address, not targeted at any individual.

During the Madaraka Day celebrations in Kanduyi Constituency, President Ruto condemned the divisive politics some leaders were engaging in, describing it as backward.

He affirmed his administration’s commitment to preventing the country from being divided along ethnic lines.

“I want to assure the people of Kenya that we will not let you down. We will never regress to the politics of ethnicity or personality. We will never return to politics where people are not at the forefront,” President Ruto pledged, vowing to focus on developing the country.

The President’s remarks come amid growing tensions within the ruling UDA party.

Recently, UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala called for the resignation of Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, accusing them of undermining Deputy President Gachagua.

This move has intensified political turmoil within the party.

Malala also targeted Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wa Muchomba with disciplinary actions for allegedly causing divisions within UDA.

The targeted leaders, particularly Kahiga and Wa Muchomba, are perceived as close allies of President Ruto.

Despite these internal conflicts, Mudavadi maintained that President Ruto’s primary focus remains on fostering national unity and addressing the concerns of all Kenyans.

He urged politicians to heed the President’s call and work towards a unified and progressive nation.

Puzzle as One-Year-Old Child Dies in Police Cell

0

A family in Makueni County is demanding justice following the tragic death of their one-and-a-half-year-old child at Kambu Police Station. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from the community.

The child’s mother, speaking to journalists, recounted the events leading to the tragedy. She explained that she was arrested on Wednesday after a business deal went awry.

Despite requesting time to retrieve her child’s medicine, the arresting officer denied her request. She had obtained the medicine the previous night after the child fell ill.

While detained, the mother said she repeatedly asked the officers to allow her to take the child to the hospital, but her pleas were ignored.

She also alleged that she was physically assaulted by the police while in the cell, with some slaps inadvertently striking the child who was strapped to her back.

Her harrowing account revealed that after realizing her child had died, the police hastily released her and forced her out of the station in the middle of the night.

“When I revealed to him that the child had passed on, he forced me out of the station and stated that he would call the OCS who had instructed that I should remain locked in,” she explained.

An autopsy has yet to be conducted to determine the exact cause of the child’s death.

This incident has drawn parallels to a similar case at Kikopey Police Station on March 12, where a suspect died under mysterious circumstances.

Residents received an autopsy report indicating that the suspect died from strangulation, leading them to storm and torch the police station in a bid to seek justice.

The Makueni case has intensified calls for a thorough investigation and accountability from the police.

Human rights organizations and community leaders are urging the authorities to ensure that justice is served and that such incidents are not repeated.

The family, grieving the loss of their young child, is appealing for support and justice in the face of this devastating tragedy.

The community remains vigilant, awaiting the autopsy results and the response from the police authorities.

Ruto and Gachagua Differ on MPs’ Political Tours

0

President William Ruto on Sunday urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to traverse the country to better discharge their duties.

Speaking at a church service in Kimilili, Bungoma County, Ruto emphasized the importance of understanding the nation to effectively exercise legislative and oversight roles.

“MPs have three roles: representation, legislation, and oversight of the government,” President Ruto stated. “While representation requires your presence in your constituencies, legislation and oversight are national duties performed in the National Assembly. It is not a village assembly; it’s the National Assembly.”

Ruto urged MPs to explore different parts of Kenya to gain a comprehensive understanding of the country.

“You have to get out of your constituency and go to the next place, understand Kenya so that as you legislate in Parliament, you understand your country,” he added.

In contrast, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had earlier advised MPs to avoid what he termed “political tourism” and remain in their constituencies.

Speaking at a different forum, Gachagua insisted, “Everyone should remain in their constituencies. Stay in your constituencies! If you have been elected in another place, why are you coming to disrupt other elected MPs? What we don’t want is political tourism.”

Gachagua emphasized that MPs should focus on their mandates to their constituents and not be seen frequently in different regions.

The Deputy President’s remarks prompted a response from Oscar Sudi, a close ally of President Ruto. Sudi defended his movement across the country, stating that he was using his own resources.

“I am at liberty to move around as much as I need to,” Sudi said. “I am garnering support for the President and following my party leader’s example in my political tours.”

The differing views between Ruto and Gachagua highlight an ongoing debate about the roles and responsibilities of MPs in Kenya.

While Ruto encourages national engagement, Gachagua advocates for a more localized focus.

This debate underscores the challenges in balancing national legislative duties with constituency responsibilities.

As the discussion continues, MPs are left to navigate their dual roles in representation and national governance, with the aim of ensuring effective service to both their constituents and the country at large.

Woman Arrested After Using Raila’s Name to Swindle Ksh25M From Nigerian Investor

0

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has preferred charges against a Kenyan woman accused of using the name of Azimio leader Raila Odinga to defraud Ksh25 million from a Nigerian investor.

According to court documents obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the woman initially approached the Nigerian investor, who works in the financial services industry, in May 2022, seeking advice on managing Ksh70 million.

Following this conversation, she later requested funds for a new project, claiming she worked for Mr. Odinga’s kin whose company had secured a contract to supply mosquito nets.

The woman convinced the investor that he would earn a substantial profit from the project.

After much deliberation, the investor agreed to provide Ksh25 million, which was transferred to her on various dates between June and December 2022. However, after receiving the funds, the woman switched off her phone and cut off all communication.

Alarmed by the situation, the investor reported the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Following a thorough investigation, the DCI identified and arrested the suspect on May 18, 2024.

Police investigations revealed that the alleged tender did not exist and that the woman had used the funds to purchase a new Range Rover. Additionally, it was discovered that she had presented a fake job card to the DCI, pretending to be a physician for the First Lady.

The suspect now faces eight counts, including forgery, falsifying contract documents, and obtaining money through false pretenses. The ODPP has stressed the importance of due diligence and warned the public against falling victim to similar schemes.

The case highlights the need for investors to thoroughly verify the authenticity of business proposals and the credentials of individuals involved to avoid falling prey to fraudsters.

School ordered to pay KSh650k compensation for expelling HIV Positive pupil

0

Najah Primary School in Garissa County has been ordered by court to pay a mother KSh650,000 for stigmatizing and discriminating against her 12-year-old son, who is living with HIV/AIDS.

The HIV and AIDS Tribunal found the school’s decision to expel the Grade Two pupil because of his HIV status to be unfair.

The boy was secretly taking Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) with help from his older brother at the school. Once the school found out about his HIV status, they expelled him and supposedly gave his mother KSh10,000 to have him leave the school.

The mother stated that the school only provided KSh600, and her son stopped going to school due to the discrimination causing him depression.

The school and it is administrator, Mohamed Noor, did not respond to the case despite being sued.

The tribunal, led by Carolyne Mboku, concluded that the school’s behavior was unfair and unlawful, amounting to discrimination against the child, which goes against Section 32 of Act.

She was awarded (the tribunal) KSh400,000 for discrimination and an extra KSh250,000 for the suffering caused by the school.

The tribunal mentioned that people with HIV who experience stigma may hesitate to seek care, and discrimination in healthcare settings can push them away, making it harder to offer HIV testing, treatment, and prevention services.

The netizens reacted in different ways towards the ruling, where some said “they should be an example…It’s an innocent kid that wants education but instead they stigmatize.”

“What does someone’s health problems have to do with the staff, waifunge tu ju hiyo ni ujinga,” while another citizen said, “minimum should have been a million and all school admin staff fired.”
