Fresh political controversy has emerged within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following explosive claims by an ODM-allied leader regarding alleged negotiations between senior party figures and the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Siaya County Governor James Orengo and ODM Secretary General Senator Edwin Sifuna have consistently taken a hardline stance against the Kenya Kwanza administration, even after the late ODM leader Raila Odinga entered into a broad-based government arrangement with President William Ruto.
The duo have repeatedly warned that it would be politically “suicidal” and democratically wrong for ODM to formally align with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the next polls.
Governor Orengo has publicly argued that joining hands with Kenya Kwanza would betray the party’s core principles and supporters, while Sifuna has maintained that ODM must remain a strong opposition force to safeguard democracy and accountability.

However, new claims by Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai have added a dramatic twist to the unfolding political realignments.
In a statement that has sparked heated debate online and within ODM ranks, Alai alleged that Orengo and Sifuna have already negotiated future positions with the United Opposition, which is associated with the Gachagua-led political formation.
According to Alai, Governor Orengo has negotiated to be made the Speaker of the Senate should the opposition form the next government.
He further alleged that Senator Sifuna has secured an agreement to become the Senate Majority Leader in the next Parliament.
“I must also negotiate a position for myself,” Alai added, in a statement many interpreted as both satirical and revealing of the intense behind-the-scenes bargaining taking place.
The allegations have not yet been publicly addressed by Orengo or Sifuna. Nonetheless, they underscore growing tensions within ODM and highlight the early jockeying for power as the 2027 General Election approaches.
