ODM leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has addressed growing public concern over his whereabouts and health after spending nearly a week outside the public eye. The veteran politician, who has been on a brief sabbatical in Dubai, is expected back in the country on Friday, November 28.
Oburu’s absence sparked speculation among supporters and political observers, especially following the emotional and demanding period that culminated in the burial of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Family members later clarified that the 82-year-old senator had taken time off on the advice of his loved ones to rest and recuperate after an intense political schedule and the personal loss.
Long-time Raila ally Victor Marende moved to dispel rumours about Oburu’s health, confirming that he had held a phone conversation with the senator and found him to be “upbeat and very active.”
“I have just spoken to the party leader Senator Oburu Oginga on phone and he is upbeat and very active. He is not sick. He will be back in the country on Friday,” Marende assured in a Facebook post, easing tensions among ODM faithful.
Before embarking on his short break, Oburu remained deeply engaged in party activities across the country. He actively participated in the ODM 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa, graced multiple rallies, and led grassroots mobilization efforts.

He also played a pivotal role in supporting party candidate Boyd Were during campaigns in Kasipul, Homa Bay County, further cementing his influence within the party.
Oburu’s son, Jaoko Oburu, earlier emphasized that the Dubai trip was purely for rest, noting that the decision was made collectively by the family and not initiated by the senator himself.
He explained that the sabbatical was meant to give Oburu space to relax, exercise lightly, and rejuvenate — not to seek medical treatment.
The senator’s break coincided with yet another painful moment for the Odinga family following the death of Beryl Achieng Odinga. Beryl passed away while receiving treatment at Nairobi West Hospital, and her body was later moved to the Lee Funeral Home.
Her death, announced by Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, has plunged the family into mourning again, only weeks after burying Raila.
Oburu’s expected return on Friday is anticipated to bring reassurance to ODM supporters and mark his resumption of active political duties after a much-needed period of rest.
