Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has once again found himself at the centre of national political debate following remarks made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Murang’a County.
Gachagua’s comments, delivered during the burial of the late James Gakuya’s mother, left mourners startled and ignited fresh speculation about the 2027 General Election.
Natembeya, who rose to the political limelight during the 2022 polls after a long career as a senior government administrator, has steadily grown his national profile.

His influence expanded further after the formation of the Tawe Movement, with supporters increasingly portraying him as a potential Luhya kingpin capable of uniting the community and negotiating power at the national level.
Speaking at the burial, Gachagua revealed that Natembeya is among several leaders being considered as a possible united opposition candidate to face President William Ruto in 2027.
He listed Natembeya alongside figures such as Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and himself, noting that consultations are ongoing on the way forward.
Despite the growing talk, Natembeya has yet to publicly declare whether he will vie for the presidency.
However, some of his allies suggest he may choose to complete his term as Trans Nzoia governor while playing a key role in fostering Luhya unity and ensuring equitable national representation.
