National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula is facing mounting political pressure in Bungoma County following controversial decisions that have sparked public debate and resistance from local leaders.
This comes just weeks after his party suffered a setback in the Chwele–Kabuchai ward by-election, where independent candidate Eric Wekesa emerged victorious — a result seen by many as a sign of shifting political tides in the region.
Despite long being viewed as the undisputed Western Kenya political kingpin, Wetangula’s influence is increasingly being questioned, particularly over the proposed relocation of Bungoma Level Six Referral Hospital from Bungoma Town to Sichei area in Kabuchai Constituency.
Former Kanduyi Member of Parliament Hon. Wafula Wamunyinyi has openly accused the Speaker of advancing personal interests at the expense of the people of Bungoma.

According to Wamunyinyi, the original plan approved by stakeholders was to upgrade the existing Bungoma Level Five Hospital to a Level Six facility — a move that would have been more cost-effective and convenient for residents.
However, he claims the plan was altered to construct a completely new hospital in Sichei, a decision that required the purchase of land. Wamunyinyi alleges that Wetangula offered his own land for the project, a move he describes as deceptive and self-serving.
He further argues that Bungoma Town, being centrally located and already hosting key infrastructure, remains the most suitable location for the county’s top referral hospital.
Wamunyinyi has vowed to mobilize leaders and residents to oppose the relocation, insisting that the hospital must remain in Bungoma Town. He warned that any attempt to force the project through without public consensus would face stiff resistance.
The controversy has reignited debate over leadership accountability and development priorities in Bungoma County, with residents now closely watching how the issue unfolds amid growing political realignments in the region.
