Tensions are rising in several counties as political parties begin preparing for grassroots elections, a process often seen as a test of party unity and internal democracy. With mobilization already underway, leaders have started sending signals aimed at preventing chaos and ensuring the exercise proceeds smoothly.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has warned that the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will not tolerate violence during its upcoming grassroots elections, saying the party is ready to take firm disciplinary action against anyone attempting to disrupt the process.
Speaking as preparations for the polls intensify, Kindiki said the party leadership is determined to ensure the elections are conducted peacefully and transparently across the country.
He emphasized that the exercise is meant to strengthen the party from the grassroots level and must not be turned into a platform for intimidation or confrontation.
According to the Deputy President, the party has already put in place structures to oversee the process and handle complaints that may arise during the elections.
He noted that anyone found inciting violence, hiring gangs, or intimidating voters would face immediate sanctions from the party leadership.
Kindiki said the UDA leadership wants members to embrace internal competition with maturity, insisting that disagreements should be resolved through democratic processes rather than confrontation.

“The party will take strong action against anyone trying to use violence during the grassroots elections. Discipline and respect for democratic processes must guide this exercise,” Kindiki said.
The grassroots elections are expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s leadership structure at the local level, including the selection of officials in wards, constituencies, and counties.
These positions are often influential in mobilizing political support ahead of national elections.
Political observers say grassroots polls in major parties can sometimes become highly competitive, as local leaders vie for influence and recognition within the party hierarchy. In previous election cycles across different parties, such contests have occasionally been marred by disputes, prompting leaders to issue early warnings to supporters.
Kindiki stressed that the ruling party wants to set an example by conducting a credible internal election that reflects democratic values. He added that peaceful participation would strengthen the party and enhance public confidence in its leadership.
The Deputy President also called on party members to remain focused on unity, urging supporters to avoid actions that could damage the party’s reputation or divide its base.
The United Democratic Alliance has been expanding its grassroots structures since the 2022 General Election that brought William Ruto to power. Party officials say the internal polls are part of ongoing efforts to consolidate support and build a strong organizational network ahead of future political contests.
Kindiki’s remarks come amid a broader national conversation about political tolerance and the need to prevent election-related violence, especially as the country gradually moves closer to the next electoral cycle.
