Makueni County is mourning the death of County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism, Sonnia Nzilani Musyoka, who passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
Her colleague, Dr. Paul Musila, confirmed the news, stating that Musyoka died at her home. Authorities are yet to release additional details as investigations continue.
Musyoka gained national attention earlier this year after facing public backlash for controversial remarks she made while addressing the tragic death of a schoolgirl. Despite the criticism, she remained an active and influential figure in county leadership and development.
At the time of her passing, Musyoka had built an extensive career in public service. She was appointed CECM for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism in February 2024, where she championed initiatives aimed at boosting local enterprise, promoting cultural heritage, and revitalizing tourism in Makueni County.

Before assuming that role, she served as County Minister for Lands, Urban Planning and Development, Environment, and Climate Change from November 2022 to February 2024.
Her leadership extended beyond county borders, notably as chair of the Inter-County Planning Committee for the Konza Buffer Zone under the Konza Technopolis Development Authority.
Since February 2023, she also chaired the Makueni County Environmental Committee, spearheading sustainable environmental management efforts.
Musyoka was equally active in the non-profit sector. In 2018, she founded the Kibwezi Center for Sustainability, an NGO dedicated to environmental conservation and community empowerment.
Additionally, she worked as a Capacity Building Consultant at Qpoint BV from 2016, contributing to organizational development both locally and internationally.
As the county and the nation absorb the news of her sudden death, tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, community leaders, and residents who worked closely with her.
