Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has finally spoken out following his candidate’s defeat in the highly contested Mbeere North by-election. The United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate, Hon. Wamudhende, clinched the seat after defeating Hon. Karsh of the Democratic Change Party (DCP), a candidate Gachagua and the united opposition factions had vigorously campaigned for.
The by-election, characterized by intense competition and heavy political presence, marked a significant political moment for Gachagua, who had spent several days in Mbeere North rallying residents to support Hon. Karsh. Despite his strong push, the electorate opted for Wamudhende, signaling a shift in ground political dynamics.
In his response, Gachagua congratulated several DCP candidates who secured victories in other wards across the country. He commended their resilience, courage, and the determination of voters who, according to him, resisted intimidation and state interference to make their democratic choices.

Gachagua’s statement read in part:
“On behalf of the DCP Party and our members, I offer hearty congratulations to Hon. Douglas Masikonde, Hon. David Warui, and Hon. Dickson Okwiri Aduda for winning the Narok Township, Kariobangi North, and Kisa East wards respectively. Our party, the newest kid on the block at just seven months old, whitewashed old parties, some as old as twenty years.”
Gachagua praised supporters in the three wards for what he termed bravery in the face of pressure and coercion.
“I salute the people of Narok Township, Kariobangi North, and Kisa East for standing up to intimidation, goons, state-sponsored militia, and violent attacks by the police to exercise their democratic right,” he said.
He further commended the electorate for rejecting voter bribery, describing it as a toxic culture that derails democratic progress.
In a message directed at aspiring politicians seeking to contest under the DCP banner, Gachagua issued fresh instructions, emphasizing that electoral success requires close engagement with voters throughout the campaign period.
“I urge all those who wish to vie for seats under our party to remain on the ground and continuously engage the electorate as they listen to them,” he stated.
Despite the loss in Mbeere North, Gachagua maintained an optimistic tone, suggesting that the party’s performance elsewhere signals a promising future.
“The future looks great!” he concluded.
The statement appears aimed at re-energizing supporters and strengthening the party’s grassroots strategy as DCP positions itself as a rising force in Kenya’s political landscape.
