Junet Claims MPs Were Paid During Gachagua Impeachment Motion

MALAVA, KENYA — National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has sparked political controversy by claiming that money changed hands in Parliament during the October 2024 impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during an ODM–UDA Broad-Based political rally in Malava, Kakamega County, on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the Suna East MP publicly alleged that funds were distributed to lawmakers to facilitate Gachagua’s removal.

In a candid address delivered in Swahili, Junet claimed an “accounting officer” coordinated the cash disbursements inside Parliament.

“Wakati tulikuwa tunafukuza Gachagua kazi, kuna kitu kilitembea hapo, huko bungeni. Wacha niseme ukweli… Na accounting officer, alikuwa mtu anaitwa Cheruiyot,” Junet told the crowd, directly naming a fellow legislator as the key figure overseeing the funds.

The Minority Leader poked fun at colleagues who allegedly received the payouts, suggesting many squandered the funds rather than investing them constructively back home. He noted that areas like nearby Bungoma saw little benefit and urged MPs who received payouts to bring those resources to their rural homes instead of wasting them in Nairobi.

Dismissing Political Realignment with Gachagua

Junet used the platform to explicitly reject any possibility of a political alliance between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the former Deputy President’s camp.

Emphasizing that ODM remains firmly rooted in its partnership with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Junet declared that the political spirit of Raila Odinga could never co-exist with Gachagua’s politics.

He highlighted regional leaders such as Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya as true custodians of that vision.
