The political temperature within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has once again spiked, exposing deep fault lines inside the party’s top leadership.
What began as a routine internal process has quickly degenerated into a bruising contest marked by public defiance, hardened camps, and accusations of power play.
ODM Party leader Oburu Oginga’s attempt to force out Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has hit a brick wall, dealing a major blow to efforts aimed at reasserting control over the party’s powerful secretariat.
Insiders say the move faced resistance from key party organs, which questioned both the timing and legality of the push to remove the Nairobi senator from office.
Sifuna, who has lately found himself at odds with sections of the party leadership, emerged defiant following the failed attempt.
The outspoken senator declared that he remains the bona fide ODM secretary-general and would confront his adversaries head on, signalling that he has no intention of vacating office quietly.
“This party has a constitution and clear structures,” Sifuna told allies, insisting that any effort to remove him outside laid down procedures would be resisted.
He accused his critics of attempting to weaponise party processes to silence dissenting voices, particularly those demanding internal accountability and reforms.

The aborted ouster has exposed simmering tensions within ODM, especially between reform-leaning leaders and the old guard accused of centralising power around the party leadership.
Sources say the clash is not merely about personalities but about the future direction of the party as it positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters of Sifuna argue that the secretary general has been targeted for speaking too boldly on national issues and for refusing to toe the line on sensitive political alignments.
They view the move against him as part of a broader attempt to discipline vocal figures within the party.
On the other hand, allies of Oburu Oginga maintain that party discipline must be upheld and that leaders who publicly contradict official positions weaken ODM’s collective bargaining power.
They accuse Sifuna of elevating personal positions above party unity.
With neither side willing to back down, ODM now faces an internal standoff that risks spilling further into the public arena.
Political observers warn that prolonged infighting could weaken the party’s standing within the Azimio coalition and embolden rivals.
For now, Edwin Sifuna remains firmly in office battle ready, unbowed and daring his opponents to make the next move.
