President William Ruto on Monday sparked conversation among Kenyans after humorously expressing surprise over the unusually high number of goats presented for sale during a government-led goat auction in Baringo County.
The Head of State, who was accompanied by several leaders from the Kenya Kwanza administration, is in the region to preside over the annual livestock auction aimed at boosting pastoralist incomes ahead of the festive season.
Addressing residents and traders at the event, President Ruto remarked, “Hii imezidi,” loosely translating to “this is too much,” after learning that farmers had brought close to 9,000 goats for sale—almost double last year’s figure of about 5,000.
His comments, captured on video and widely shared online, drew laughter from the crowd and quickly attracted reactions across social media platforms.

The President went on to explain that the sharp increase in livestock numbers was a positive sign linked to improved security in the region.
According to Ruto, enhanced peace and stability in parts of Baringo have allowed farmers to move freely with their animals without fear of bandit attacks or theft, encouraging more participation in the auction.
Flanked by cabinet secretaries, governors, and other Kenya Kwanza leaders, Ruto urged government officials and members of the public attending the event to buy goats from the farmers, many of whom were eager to sell their livestock ahead of Christmas.
He emphasized that such initiatives are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the livestock value chain and put more money directly into the pockets of rural households.
Residents welcomed the President’s remarks, noting that increased security has transformed livelihoods in the once-volatile region. As the auction continued, the large turnout of goats was seen not as a problem, but as evidence of growing confidence among pastoralist communities in Baringo County.
