Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has signaled a firm stance on internal party democracy, declaring that anyone interested in contesting the gubernatorial seat in Homa Bay County under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket must be prepared to face a free and fair nomination process.
Speaking during a leaders’ gathering in the Nyanza Region on April 19, 2026, Wanga emphasized that the party will not entertain favoritism or backdoor dealings ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Her remarks come amid growing political tensions between ODM and figures linked to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The governor, who has previously accused UDA-allied leaders of attempting to weaken ODM’s influence in its traditional strongholds, maintained that while dialogue with rival parties remains open, any efforts to undermine ODM from within or outside will be strongly resisted.

“We are ready to face anyone who wants to run for governor on an ODM ticket, but it must be through the people,”
Wanga stated, drawing applause from supporters. She reiterated that nominations across the country will be conducted transparently, giving grassroots voters the ultimate authority in deciding party flagbearers.
Her statement is seen as a direct response to mounting pressure from aspirants and political factions seeking clarity on ODM’s nomination framework. Analysts say Wanga’s position aims to reinforce party unity while discouraging defections and parallel political mobilization.
As political realignments begin to take shape ahead of 2027, Homa Bay is emerging as a key battleground. Wanga’s declaration sets the tone for competitive primaries, signaling that the race for the county’s top seat will be determined at the ballot, not through political maneuvering.
