Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has weighed in on recent remarks by Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga regarding the 2027 presidential race, adding a new twist to the unfolding succession debate.
A few days ago, Oburu Odinga surprised many Kenyans after declaring that he would be the sole ODM presidential candidate should the party opt to contest the 2027 General Election on its own.
His declaration sparked widespread debate within political circles, with questions emerging over the opposition’s strategy and possible alliances ahead of the polls.

Speaking during a public engagement, Gachagua addressed Oburu’s ambitions, stating that if the ODM leader is serious about his presidential bid, he should first seek the backing of the United Opposition.
Gachagua remarked, partly in jest, that Oburu would need to formally approach the opposition leaders and convince them to support his candidature. He added that if Oburu managed to do so, the opposition might even consider backing him.
Gachagua further noted that a united opposition front would pose a significant challenge to President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
He argued that Ruto’s path to a second term would be difficult without strong support from ODM strongholds, especially at a time when the President is said to have lost part of the Mount Kenya voting bloc aligned to Gachagua.
The comments have reignited conversations around opposition unity and possible realignments ahead of 2027.
