Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed what he termed as a new political tactic being adopted by the United Opposition to counter President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election, following their setback in the Mbeere North by-election.
Speaking in Murang’a County in a video that has since circulated widely online, Gachagua said opposition leaders had gone back to the drawing board after closely studying President Ruto’s political strategies.
He claimed that the coalition had agreed to delay announcing the name of its presidential flag bearer to avoid early attacks and sustained political pressure.

According to Gachagua, premature declaration of a candidate would expose them to what he described as coordinated efforts by Ruto’s allies to discredit opposition figures through online campaigns and political propaganda.
He argued that holding back the announcement would allow the opposition to consolidate support and protect their eventual candidate from early political damage.
The former deputy president further disclosed that consultations are ongoing among key opposition figures, including Martha Karua, Fred Matiang’i, Kalonzo Musyoka and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
He noted that discussions are focused on identifying a strong and united candidate capable of mounting a formidable challenge against President Ruto.
Gachagua maintained that despite recent electoral setbacks, the opposition remains united and strategic as it positions itself for the 2027 presidential race.
