Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has finally broken his silence on his relationship with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, putting to rest growing speculation that the two leaders are quietly working together under the emerging United Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
For months, political observers have noted a shifting dynamic in Mount Kenya politics, with Uhuru Kenyatta intensifying his push for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as the opposition’s preferred presidential candidate.
Uhuru has been actively mobilising leaders and grassroots supporters in the region, positioning Matiang’i as a strong alternative to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
At the same time, Gachagua has also been spotted attending public functions alongside Matiang’i in Mount Kenya, fueling speculation of a possible alliance and a united opposition front.
These developments have left many wondering where Gachagua stands in the unfolding political realignments.

Speaking during a recent engagement, Gachagua clarified his position, stating that his immediate mission as a leader from the Mount Kenya region is to defend former President Uhuru Kenyatta from what he termed as sustained political attacks by the Kenya Kwanza leadership.
According to Gachagua, Uhuru deserves respect and dignity after serving the country at the highest office.
He argued that the former Head of State should be allowed to enjoy his retirement in peace, without being dragged into political fights or blamed for the failures of the current administration. Gachagua accused some leaders within Kenya Kwanza of using Uhuru as a scapegoat instead of taking responsibility for their governance challenges.
While Gachagua stopped short of explicitly declaring support for Matiang’i’s presidential bid, his remarks have added weight to claims that Mount Kenya leaders may be rallying behind a common opposition strategy.
Analysts say his stance signals a possible political realignment that could significantly shape the 2027 race.
As political temperatures continue to rise, all eyes remain on how the relationship between Gachagua, Uhuru, and Matiang’i will evolve in the coming months.
