Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared his intention to run against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, vowing to make the Head of State a one-term president if handed the ticket by the United Opposition.
Speaking to residents in Githurai, Ruiru Constituency, Gachagua said his removal from office through an impeachment motion did not mark the end of his political journey.
The motion was filed by Embakasi East MP Mwengi Mutuse, leading to his ouster from the government he helped form after the 2022 elections.
Gachagua’s declaration, however, sparked mixed reactions among his supporters, with questions arising over the provisions of the 2010 Constitution that bar impeached state officers from holding public office.

Addressing the concerns, the former Deputy President maintained that his legal team and political allies were still reviewing the matter, insisting that the Constitution also provides avenues for interpretation and redress.
He further revealed that the opposition has not yet settled on a single flag bearer, noting that consultations are ongoing among key leaders to agree on a unified strategy.
According to Gachagua, the opposition’s agenda will focus on lowering the cost of living, restoring public trust in government, and defending devolution.
He urged his supporters to remain patient, saying the United Opposition would soon chart a clear path ahead of the 2027 polls.
