A somber mood engulfed Lurende village in Kabuchai Constituency today as family, friends, and fellow students gathered to bid farewell to Eugene Wamalwa, a first-year student at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), who tragically collapsed and died during the recent Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment exercise at Busakala grounds.
According to witnesses, Eugene, who had shown great enthusiasm for the exercise, collapsed moments after completing one of the physical fitness drills. Efforts by medical officers at the recruitment centre to save his life proved futile.
His death sent shockwaves across the community, with many describing him as a bright and disciplined young man who had a deep passion for serving his country.
Speaking during the emotional burial ceremony, family members described Eugene as a determined and patriotic youth who had dreamt of following in the footsteps of his late father, who also served in the military.

“He admired his father’s bravery and discipline. Joining the KDF was his lifelong dream, but unfortunately, he died trying,” said his mother tearfully.
MMUST representatives, student leaders, and local leaders were also present to comfort the grieving family. They called for improved health screening and safety measures during future recruitment exercises to prevent similar tragedies.
Bungoma leaders also praised Eugene’s courage and dedication, saying his spirit reflected the true sacrifice of young Kenyans who aspire to serve their nation selflessly.
As the casket was lowered into the grave, tears flowed freely among mourners, many still struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of such a promising young man.
Eugene Wamalwa’s untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the risks young people face in their pursuit of national service. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
