Fresh political tremors are rocking the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following claims that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is set to be removed as the party’s Secretary General and stripped of his role as the Senate’s Deputy Minority Whip.
The claims were made by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who alleged that decisive action against Sifuna would be taken this week.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, January 5, Cherargei accused Sifuna of political duplicity, arguing that his strong association with the opposition and shifting alliances have rendered him untrustworthy.
The senator cited Sifuna’s role in supporting the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024, claiming this demonstrated what he termed as “deceit, hypocrisy and deceptive politics.”

Cherargei further asserted that ODM would remove Sifuna as Secretary General, while the Senate would move to dewhip him as Deputy Minority Whip, paving the way for him to “join saboteurs of the broad-based government.”
However, he did not provide evidence to support the claims, and ODM’s Communications Director Philip Etale could not be reached for comment.
Sifuna has in recent months faced mounting pressure within ODM, particularly over his vocal opposition to the broad-based political arrangement, which he has repeatedly described as unsustainable for the party’s future.
His stance has unsettled sections of the party leadership and youth wing.
ODM Youth League leader Kasmuel McOure publicly described Sifuna as unfit for the Secretary General role, arguing that his exit would not significantly weaken the party.
McOure urged the senator to focus on delivering for Nairobi residents instead of clashing with fellow party members.
The situation has been further inflamed by Sifuna’s public spat with Suna East MP Junet Mohamed over the handling of campaign resources during the 2022 General Election.
As the war of words escalates, all eyes are now on ODM’s next move amid growing internal divisions.
