Murang’a County — Orange Democratic Party (ODM) Secretary-General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, has shocked political circles after revealing what he believes led to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s defeat in the 2022 general election.
Speaking during a public event in Murang’a, Sifuna claimed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta had actively supported Raila’s bid for the presidency, releasing funds to strengthen the Azimio La Umoja coalition’s campaign machinery.
However, according to Sifuna, the support was undermined when Suna East Member of Parliament, Hon. Junet Mohammed, allegedly misappropriated some of the funds intended for coalition agents.

“Many agents were left unpaid, and some abandoned their duties. That is one of the main reasons Raila lost the election,” Sifuna said.
In response, Junet Mohammed strongly denied the allegations, clarifying that the funds from Uhuru were given to his personal aide, who had traveled with him to Nigeria recently.
He maintained that any claims of misappropriation are misplaced. “The former president cannot claim he lost money when it was entrusted to his own aide to manage,” Junet asserted.
Sifuna’s explanation has reignited debates within ODM and the broader Azimio coalition over internal coordination and accountability, highlighting lingering tensions from the 2022 election.
