On July 16, 2024, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, accused of murdering 42 women and dismembering their bodies in the Kware area of Embakasi South, appeared in court.

Khalusha, through his attorney John Maina Ndegwa, claimed he was subjected to severe police brutality and torture, which forced him to confess to the crimes. Ndegwa pleaded for the court to provide Khalusha with immediate medical attention.

“My client urgently needs medical care,” Ndegwa stated in the Makadara Law Courts. “He was molested and tortured during his detention, and the confession to murdering 42 people is utterly false.”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) refuted these claims, stating that only one officer was involved in taking Khalusha’s statement.

The DCI requested a 30-day detention period for Khalusha to complete their investigation, arguing that his release could lead to further criminal activities.

The DCI emphasized the need for additional time to locate witnesses and families of the victims, who are dispersed across the country.

They also plan to conduct DNA sampling, an identification parade, and a mental assessment of the suspect.

Khalusha’s defense team opposed the 30-day detention, urging the court to limit it to 14 days. “The prosecution’s claims are speculative,” Ndegwa argued. “My client has a right to a fair trial under Article 50, and the police should not be granted unlimited time.”

Despite the defense’s objections, Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi granted the DCI’s request for a 30-day detention period to allow for thorough investigations.
