Reports circulating online suggest that CNN African correspondent Larry Madowo has been barred from entering Uganda following the airing of a recent CNN report on alleged post-election killings in Tanzania.
The claims, which have not been independently verified, indicate that Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has taken issue with the journalist’s coverage, accusing him of contributing to what he described as “propaganda campaigns” targeting African governments.
The development comes just days after Madowo’s CNN segment highlighted allegations of violence involving Tanzanian citizens after the October general election in which President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner by a wide margin.

The report drew significant attention across the region, sparking discussions about press freedom and the handling of election-related security matters in East Africa.
According to statements circulating on social media attributed to President Museveni, the Ugandan Head of State claimed that journalists like Madowo were being “used by foreign interests” to portray African countries negatively on the global stage.
He reportedly cited the CNN documentary as an example of what he termed “unfortunate and misleading narratives” that undermine sovereignty and stability within the region.
While Ugandan authorities have not issued an official statement confirming the alleged ban, the discussion has already ignited debate among regional media watchdogs, human rights advocates, and press-freedom organisations.
Many argue that if the reports are accurate, such a step would represent a significant setback for journalistic independence in East Africa.
Larry Madowo, known for his bold and often critical reporting, has not publicly responded to the claims. CNN has also not released an official comment regarding the matter.
As the story continues to unfold, observers across the continent are waiting for formal clarification from Ugandan authorities and CNN to determine the accuracy of the circulating allegations.
